Meet Jarvis

After one year of coding, Mark Zuckerberg unveils his custom built the AI Robot Running Mark Zuckerberg’s Smart Home

Imagine a world where all of your devices are seamlessly interconnected and controlled through the power of voice command. Your house is filled with smart devices that talk to each other and control everything from your thermostat to your home entertainment system. 2016 has been called the break out year for voice control and the internet of things, but the complexity and price factor has made smart homes more of a luxury for tech savvy folks than a necessity for regular consumers.

Take a tour through Mark Zuckerberg’s smart home

Enter Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Every year, Mark sets a new personal growth challenge for the upcoming new year. Past New Years resolutions include mastering the notoriously difficult language of Mandarin, reading two books a month, and only consuming animal products killed by his own two hands. 2016’s personal growth theme was invention, and in the spirit of Tony Stark, Zuckerberg has unveiled a custom built AI assistant that helps him with work around the home – just like Jarvis from Iron Man.

Jarvis manages Zuckerberg’s morning routine – which includes making breakfast

Jarvis is Zuckerberg’s highly personalized version of smart home technology akin to Amazon’s Alexa service. Jarvis runs on Zuckerberg’s custom built IPhone app and Facebook’s internal Messenger technology. Through the ease of text or voice command, Zuckerberg can control the lights, temperature, music, security system, kitchen, electronic and television appliances in his home. Set to the stylistic voice of Morgan Freeman, Jarvis is integrated with Facebook’s facial detection technology to recognize users and personalize their experience according to their individual tastes and preferences.

When you step into Mark Zuckerberg’s 5,600 SF Palo Alto home, Jarvis immediately recognizes you through Facebook’s facial detection service and alerts him that you have arrived. Zuckerberg explains that Jarvis’ main purpose is to manage the hundreds of responsibilities that dominate life in and outside the home. Jarvis wakes his daughter Max to Mandarin lessons every morning after Facebook’s facial recognition determines the child is awake, opens and closes doors for visitors, and plays music based on his wife Priscilla’s preferences. Zuckerberg spent about 100 – 150 hours building his AI assistant and has no illusions to what Facebook engineers could accomplish in thousands of hours of computer programming at one of the most important technology companies in the world.

AI technology is essential to Facebook’s future, which connects billions of users across Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook itself. Experts have forecasted that there will be 50 billion connected objects by 2020, translating to a market valued in trillions of dollars. The fact that there will be a globalized system of interconnected devices holds so much potential to change our lives that it’s often referred to as the internet’s next generation.

Zuckerberg’s wife Dr. Priscilla Chan had mixed feelings about Jarvis

So why aren’t we all living in smart, connected homes by now? Part of the problem is too much competition and not enough collaboration to integrate every single product into a seamless user experience. Zuckerberg’s biggest challenge building Jarvis was trying to bridge a link between electronic devices that were wired for smart home technology but wouldn’t pair. For consumers, ease of use and security of the system are the top factors driving the adoption of smart home technology. In 2017, we can expect greater synchronicity between brands with products like Samsung’s Smart Things hub, which works as a bridge and links devices that refuse to talk to one another.

There is no release date for Jarvis as of yet, so Amazon’s Alexa will retain its title as voice control assistant du jour of the moment. What’s next for one of world’s most ambitious billionaires? Politics, of course. Zuckerberg’s 2017 New Years resolution aims to investigate the societal divisions that shaped the contentious 2016 presidential election. Zuckerberg plans to visit all 50 states in order to connect with more Americans and understand the economic disruption caused by technology and globalization. As one of the most influential media moguls in the entire world, Zuckerberg plans to address the ongoing fake news crisis and allegations of conservative bias that plagued the Facebook platform during the heated election. That’s no small feat for one of the world’s most famous Iron Men.
