A History of The Hollywood Hills

The Hills as we know them today began as a neighborhood development called Hollywoodland. The development of Hollywoodland began in 1923 with the syndicate owned by Harry Chandler, developer Sidney H. Woodruff and the founder of West Hollywood, General M. H. Sherman. Hollywoodland lost the “land” portion the iconic sign that stands today as Hollywood, overlooking the city.

The sign was erected in 1923 and originally read “HOLLYWOODLAND”. Its purpose was to advertise the name of the housing development in the hills around Beachwood Canyon.

The Hollywood Hills developed over time to what we know it as today to be the home of movie stars and musicians. A hug music scene took erupted in the Hollywood Hills through the 60’s and 70’s. Laurel Canyon was heavily saturated with musicians recording and sharing ideas. Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, Carole King, The Byrds, The Eagles,  Neil Young, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and Micky Dolenz & Peter Tork of The Monkees were some of the many musicians that created history in Laurel Canyon.

Today we see record sale prices of real estate in the Hollywood Hills. This area retains value because of the jetliner views and close proximity to the center of the city without direct city atmosphere.
