The Three Perfect Winter Getaways in California

November 19, 2020

Lake Tahoe in December

Lake Tahoe is a beautiful place in any season, but it is a magical place to visit in California during winter. While snow is not guaranteed in December, it is likely that this area will be located high in the basin of the Sierra Nevada Mountains covered in shimmering white. The crystal blue water, breathtaking vistas, and fresh mountain air are unrivaled.

Activities are plentiful in Lake Tahoe including outdoor ice skating at Northstar, seeing the ice sculptures at Heavenly Mountain Resort and taking the gondola up the mountain for stunning views. A drive around the lake with a stop at the Emerald Bay lookout is also well worth the while as it is the second most photographed spot in all of the United States.

Skiing and snowboarding at one of the many resorts that surround the lake are among the most popular winter activities in Lake Tahoe. Even in the case of uncooperative snowy weather, all resorts will make plenty of man-made snow if necessary, ensuring that guests will be able to hit the slopes. Alternatively, it’s always nice to a hike down to the Vikingsholm Mansion or the Eagle Falls trail.

Getaway House in Running Springs, CA

The Getaway House is a series of cabins located just outside of some of the biggest cities in the USA. Designed to be an escape for city folks who are always on the go, The Getaway House promises to help give always-on guests the “permission to be off.” The Los Angeles Getaway Outpost is located just outside of Big Bear, in Running Springs. This location is nestled high up in the San Bernardino Mountains and surrounded by giant pine trees all around.

Each of the cabins are spread 50 – 150 feet apart from one another, scattered amongst wooded areas spanning acres and acres. They are self-catering, allowing to check in and out via pin code, and come with a good amount of essential necessities. It is notable to highlight that the cabins do not come equipped with WiFi. Each cabin comes with a Cellphone Lockbox, encouraging guests to stow their tech away and be present. Here, the only obligation should be to completely disconnect and enjoy.

At every Outpost, there’s at least one scenic nature trail, a short, easy hike on Getaway property to go for a quick stroll without hopping in the car to drive to a trailhead. In addition to hiking, several Outposts are also close to lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. Guests may visit Lake Gregory by the Los Angeles Outpost, which is easy to get to and park at. From there, it is nice to take a stroll around the entire lake in about 45 minutes before hopping back in the car to head back to the city.
